Department of the Air Force Environmental Restoration Program Five-Year Review Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site Public Notice – The Department of the Air Force Environmental Restoration Program announces the beginning of the Five-Year Review process for Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site (LRRS) Alaska. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the National Contingency Plan §300.430(f)(4)(ii) requires a Five-Year Review for site SS002 where CERCLA hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants remain onsite above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. For non-CERCLA site SS003, a similar review is being completed every five years in accordance with U.S. Air Force policy. The process will document whether the remedies implemented at site SS002 (Vehicle Fueling Station Area) and SS003 (Air Terminal Area) remain protective of human health and the environment. The remedy selected for Site SS002 in the July 2011 Record of Decision is soil excavation and offsite disposal. The remedy for SS003 in the July 2011 Record of Decision is institutional controls, natural attenuation, and long-term monitoring. SS002 contaminants that were addressed by these remedies are polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). SS003 remedies addressed total aromatic hydrocarbons. This will be the third Five-Year Review. The Air Force recognizes the importance of public participation in the Environmental Restoration Program and encourages your involvement. If you have any questions or concerns about the Point Barrow LRRS Cleanup Program or if you have direct knowledge regarding the effectiveness of the remedies, the Air Force would like to talk to you.
